St. Martin de Porres School Update #36

May 26, 2010

From the desk of Mr. Harper

Our Student Learning Expectation for this

week is SLE #1 WE HAVE FAITH

It is clear that we are called to do the very best

we can each day. But it is also clear that we

need the help of God to be successful each day.

Often we are slow to call on God for help. We

are slow to ask other family members or people

in our community for help or advice.

We teach our students that when we give our

best efforts and ask Jesus for help that our

prayers will be answered and our needs

fulfilled.

Each day is a blessing for us. Each day is

another chance to ask for help and to give help

to others. We are a community of faith. We do

have faith in ourselves, faith in our community

and faith in God.

TOGETHER WE ACKNOWLEDGE OUR

BLESSINGS AND WORK TO ACHIEVE

OUR DREAMS.

Special thanks to all the students that

participated in CYO girls basketball. The

season was wonderful and we had a record

number of participants. We look forward to

building our skills and competing next season.

Our Student Learning Expectation for this week is SLE #5, WE MAKE GOOD CHOICES.

The choices we make are truly an important part of being successful. Congratulations to those parents and staff members who participated in the eight week Eating Smart-Being Active program. We look forward to hearing from the participants when they share the knowledge they learned.  They have agreed to be leaders for our next Eating Smart Program.

Making good choices is realizing that some old sayings are true. We are what we eat. Please choose to read the information in the red envelope that will help us make the choices we need to avoid being overweight or unhealthy.

We hope that each family makes a careful choice about this Summer. Enclosed is information about the many opportunities that will be available at our school.  PLEASE FILL OUT THE FORMS FOR SUMMER SCHOOL AND RETURN THEM NEXT WEEK.

Thank you to all the family members that attended our parent meeting. Your input helps make us a good school and gives us a clear direction. Thank you for those who have chosen to be part of the parent leadership team to help keep our school moving forward.

As a community WE MAKE GOOD CHOICES.  We choose to work TOGETHER

Our Student Learning Expectation for this week is WE LEARN

Last week learning was at its best as parents participated in a parent internet safety workshop. If you did not get a child safety CD please contact the office.

This week each classroom is learning the principles of school recycling. We hope to celebrate Earth Day by launching our school-wide recycling program. Students will design posters and begin to REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE

Next week we will ask students to demonstrate how much they have learned this year through the ITBS Testing (Iowa Test of Basic Skills).  On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday students in grades 2-8 will take the ITBS Spring Test. Testing each morning from 8:45 to Noon. This test is one measure of how much students have improved academically during this current year. In addition to report cards and discussions with your child’s teacher, each family will receive a report of the testing results over the last 2-3 years. A major purpose of these measurements is to stir discussion of how school and family can continue to work together to improve the skills and learning of each student.

It is important that every child get enough rest, nourishment and exercise  so that their minds are sharp and ready to learn. I remind families that each day breakfast is available for all children who arrive to school before 8 am.

Together we support all the efforts of our children and school staff. TOGETHER WE ACKNOWLEDGE OUR BLESSINGS AND WORK TO ACHIEVE OUR DREAMS.

PLEASE RETURN PARENT SURVEY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE…YOUR NAME WILL BE ENTERED INTO A RAFFLE

From the Desk of Mr. Harper

Our Student Learning Expectation for this week is WE HAVE FAITH. In all things we do we strive to be a community of Faith

The great Blessings of this Easter Season continue for the students and families of St. Martin de Porres. We acknowledge the blessings of the Holiday School Program which cared for students during our break from school. We acknowledge the blessing of Girls Basketball which continues to mold and challenge our girls to be good sports as they compete and sharpen their skills.

This week we had a very special event.  On Tuesday members of the school community gathered with families to celebrate the blessing of Baptism for 11 children. The care of these families, the participation of the children in our sacramental preparation program and the support of Sister Trudy are all blessings for our school.

This week the Colgate Van visits the Elementary Campus to provide a free dental screening for children in grades K-3.Thanks to the help of Dr. Marinela Carter we have this blessing to share with our students..

We are providing an important meeting for all parents on Thursday to keep our children safe on the internet. Another blessing
